CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Sadie pulled into the small parking lot of the Java Sun Café, performed the ritual of tucking Coco safely into the tote bag, and put Seymour’s letter into the pocket of her jacket so she wouldn’t have to hunt around for it.

The bell on the door jingled as she pushed it open, and warmth and a rush of scents—especially coffee and cinnamon—enveloped her. She didn’t yet see Froggy. Deciding she deserved a treat after the drama at the foundation headquarters, she ordered a chocolate croissant and a latte, found a small table near the front window, and sat herself down with her tote bag on her lap to wait for her order. She had a good view of the people coming and going, so she knew she wouldn’t miss the detective’s arrival.

Sadie loved to people watch. She liked to describe what she saw to Coco, though this act sometimes drew stares from people who thought she was either talking to herself or talking to a tote bag. “Coco,” she whispered, “you should see the marvelous hat on this woman. She’s wrapped a fuchsia scarf around the crown, and the tail of the scarf blows out behind her like a wedding veil.” A gaunt man in a black suit scissored his way through a crowd of young girls, some with hands linked, who followed a tall, broad-shouldered woman who must have been a teacher or chaperone.

The front door’s bell jingled again, and Detective Frogert entered the café. He wore a light gray trench coat over his suit, and the wrinkles in the fabric reminded Sadie of an elephant’s leg. He looked around the café until he spotted her, waved, and stood in line to place his order.

Sadie pulled the letter out of her jacket pocket and smoothed it open on the table in front of her, careful to avoid a damp spot. She skimmed through it again, trying to read between the lines. Was Seymour having an affair with Maggie? Or was he merely tempted? The wording was vague enough that either scenario could be the case.

Froggy set down his to-go bag and a large coffee and sat across from Sadie just as a young woman brought Sadie her croissant and latte.

Froggy took off the lid on his coffee, sipped, then winced. “Hot.” He replaced the lid. “Now. What’s this ‘something’ you want to show me that Ms. Wainwright was too broken up to bring me herself?”

Sadie drank some of her latte, which was in a ceramic mug rather than a to-go cup. “Charlotte found this in Maggie Barton’s desk at the foundation headquarters.” She handed him the paper. “It appears to be a sort of love letter from Seymour Wainwright to Maggie.”

As he read the letter quickly, his eyebrows rose higher and higher. He didn’t say anything, looked up at Sadie, then read the note again.

“What do you think?” Sadie finally asked, anxious to hear Froggy’s response.

“What do I think? I think I need more information about Ms. Barton’s activities the day Mrs.
